In this unit, students will explore the idea of censorship as it relates to the novel. They will do this by examining the use and understanding of “the n word” and hate speech in America. To do this, students will examine a Supreme Court case involving hate speech. After, students will read two opposing documents that either supports the banning of the novel based on its hateful, marginalizing language, or fight against it. Using the basic structure of argumentative writing, students will use the texts to support their own arguments on whether or not Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird” should have been banned from schools.
