Students will investigate the Social Media Platforms today, read about the history of “social media”, analyze court cases involving students and censorship, as well as determine current incidences of censorship and their sanctions. They will focus on the guiding questions: (1) What is deviance and conformity and how are these sociological concepts related to censorship? (2) What are the established norms of social media, who determines them, and why? (3) What are the types of sanctions that are used to convey and enforce norms on social media sites? (4) In my use of social media how do I conform, to whom, and why? Common Core Standards are addressed, as students will need to evaluate and synthesize multiple sources to answer the above questions.
