Blanco In this unit on censorship of literature in the high school setting, eleventh grade students will focus on the essential questions: What are the rights of students in a high school setting under the First Amendment? Who makes the decisions to ban or censor reading materials in the classroom or the school library? What would our nation be without free speech? Adhering to the Common Core Standards, students will read and interpret the First Amendment. They will understand their rights as a student and understand the dangers of censorship coupled with freedom of speech. Students will review actual pivotal court cases and have Socratic Seminars on important aspects of censorship. At the end of the unit, students will have a clear understanding of their rights and a clear understanding of the First Amendment.
