In this 9 day 135 minute block-schedule curriculum unit, I will work on the foundation of student’s communication and presentation skills. This unit will be taught to 11th grade students. The unit starts with vocabulary associated with treatment plan presentations. Next, students will view and participate in a variety of ways to communicate with patients, build trust, and listen effectively. Students will evaluate charts, graphs, and data used to determine sociological factors that influence patients’ needs for dental treatment. Students will locate and evaluate various dental articles on patient compliance with dental treatment. Students will consider the sociological elements that are factors in patient compliance. Students will evaluate their strengths and weaknesses in effective communication. Students will consider potential patient objections. Finally, students will be given a real world scenario to create a patient treatment plan and an appropriate dialogue to present the treatment. After their presentations, students will be given objections to the treatment and will need to convince the audience the treatment should be completed.
