This unit focuses on ways to foster reasoning and discussion before moving to writing and drawing in solving problem situations in mathematics. With the use of Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, this unit contains lessons designed to make problem solving a social-collaborative process. Using examples of the various types of addition and subtraction situations, children will work in Mathematics Circles to discuss, analyze, solve, share, and justify their answers to each situation. Groups will engage in analysis of their problem solving strategy choices and effectiveness. This unit is intended for use in kindergarten mathematics classrooms but can be modified for use in first and second grades. Lessons within this unit can be taught throughout the year or as a part of units of study for addition and subtraction strategies.
