<Normal xml:lang="EN-US">This two week curriculum unit will have students approach the Civil Rights Movement from a new angle: the role of children. Using novel Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry we will analyze the effect Jim Crow Laws had on African American children living in the deep South. Next, students will analyze primary sources and secondary sources articles to identify the role of the children in the movement by studying the event known as the Children’s March of 1963. Students will develop claims using textual evidence to determine the impact— if any impact –on the Civil Rights Movement. Essentially, students will determine if children can impact human history. This unit can be used and applied with any group of middle school students learning to write claims supporting their analysis and finding the appropriate textual evidence to support their conclusions and establishing a clear relationship amongst their claims. The lesson of this unit can be applied in any secondary English or Social Studies classroom. </Normal>
