<Normal xml:lang="EN-US">This unit introduces middle school students to the Civil Rights Movement by studying the events and perspectives of school-age children who lived through the turmoil of the 1960s. Students will study specific events from the height of the Civil Rights Movement during the 1960s. Using various primary sources such as speeches and news articles, students gain knowledge of the major events and concepts of the movement. The goals of the unit are for students to understand that the rights of minorities cannot be ignored by the majority and how political freedom is secured within the American political system. This unit can be used in social studies or English Language Arts classrooms with students in grades six through eight. </Normal>
