2-D Shapes: Do We Have an Identity Crisis?

This unit is designed for a fifth grade mathematics class. It is designed to meet the common core geometric standard to classify geometric figures. The unit takes the student through a review of background information needed to successfully classify geometric figures. The activities give the student sufficient support to apply the attributes of geometric figures and successfully classify them, first at a limited basis, and then with less support. Finally the student is directed to make conclusions based upon the classifications made in the activities. The final project gives the students an opportunity to apply some of the geometric concepts in a simulated real-life activity to reinforce the usefulness of geometry in the real world.
