This ten day curriculum unit was designed for implementation in a third grade classroom. Students will rely on multiple modalities to closely examine their own ideas of culture and tradition, while exploring those of other people and religions around the world. Through interview, students will hold rich conversations with their families, other adults, and peers to learn how tradition varies from home to home, community to community. With the help of children’s picture books, students will discuss the over-arching idea of acceptance and cultural sensitivity with the guidance of their teacher. Other children’s literature, video clips, and blog excerpts will provide new knowledge of celebrations around the world. With a focus on Islam, students will identify similarities and determine differences between their traditions and celebrations with that of Muslims, Catholics, and other religions. By the end of the unit, students should recognize that commonalities exist and the differences make us unique.
