Islam Literature Circles

This unit is meant for students in sixth through ninth grades. It is helpful if they are studying or have studied Islam. Each lesson takes 45-60 minutes. The length is flexible as the idea behind Literature Circles is to meet once a week over a period of time. It is recommended to meet, at least, six times. The goal is to expose students to Muslim people and culture in modern day times through literature. By using Literature Circles, individual students are able to discuss one book in depth and relate to one character’s experience. However, through whole class discussion, students are exposed to a multitude of challenges that Muslims face as they migrate to different countries. The goal is for students to see Muslims as average people with average problems and not simply identify one group of people by their religion. If you have never used Literature Circles before, this unit will help you get started.
