Project 6: Expressive Value

DUE: in class, Wednesday, Nov.29

Objective: Use select values (not necessarily a full range of values)--but not just black and white--to create a drawing that expresses mood or some other concept.

Choose a subject matter or construct a setup through which you can explore the use of value to represent a particular idea. The idea could be a mood or feeling such as happiness or sadness; it could also be an experience such as loss, protest, or longing. Think about how the values you use can describe the concept you begin with.

Base your drawing on direct observation, meaning draw from life. With your observations of forms and light, you can then take liberties with how you manipulate the range of values you use. Draw on sketchbook paper using any of the materials--or any combination of the materials--we have used thus far: pencil, compressed charcoal, vine charcoal, conté.

Criteria for evaluation include:

• considered range of values
• clarity of light
• clarity of form
• clear and logical spatial relationships (including linear perspective)
• overall visual interest
• inventiveness and creativity
• neatness and craftsmanship
