X-Ray Crystallographic Facility
The X-Ray Crystallographic Facility of the
Department
of Chemistry and Biochemistry conducts characterizations by X-Ray diffraction
of small-molecule organic or inorganic single crystals submitted primarily
by the
Department. As
an extension service, the facility also accepts sample submissions from
other departments of the
University,
and from local, national, and international collaborators of academe and
industry. The facility also serves as a graduate research laboratory for
selected graduate students pursuing studies in inorganic chemistry leading
to a doctorate degree.
Currently, structural studies are performed on a CCD-detector-equipped
Bruker P4 diffractometer (a four-circle
SMART
system) and a conventional, P4 four-circle X-Ray diffractometer. Both are run at low (< - 40 C) temperatures,
and equipped with molybdenum-target tubes. Structures are solved with SHELXTL
software. A microscope-equipped dry box is kept under nitrogen for mounting
air-sensitive crystals. Typical turn-around times under average conditions,
from start of data-collection to completely refined structure, range from
under a day to three days. We also maintain an ftp site
for the convenience of our collaborators. Visit our
gallery
to view several structures and other pictures.
