ART 380 - Intermediate Photography
As Presented by Ben Montaque, Fall 2003.

Introduction:

Welcome to Intermediate Photography. This class will cover advanced camera technique, as well as black and white film devel opment and printing techniques. You will be working on one project which will develop into your final portfolio. Thorughout the term, you will have a serie s of assignments that will utilize the skills learned during the lectures. In addition to assignments, you will be required to shoot one roll of film per week which relates to your portfolio project. This means that you will be expected to do a lot of work outside of the designated class times.

Attendance:

Because we will be covering a great deal of information, students are expected to attend all classes as scheduled. Missing one lecture or lab puts you at a great disadvantage. If you should miss a class, it is your responsibility to get lecture notes and copies of handouts from anothe r student.

Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class and lab. Students are to be present on or before scheduled starting times and should return promptly from breaks.

Attendance will also be part of your grade. Three unexcused absences will lower your final grade by one whole letter. To a void unexcused absences, please try to contact me before class. If a project is due before class that you cannon attend, I will expect it at the beginning of our next scheduled class and i s subject to penalties as detailed below.

Make Up Exams & Quizzes:

In order to make up an exam or quiz, the student must notify me prior to the quiz that they will be absent and the reason fo r the absence. Students with an unexcused absence will not be allowed to make up an exam or quiz.

Late Assignments:

Assignments not handed in by the project's due date will be considered late. An assignment that is one day to one week late will lose 10 points. Assignments that are more than one week late will not be accepted, thus giving you a failing grade for that assignment. Projects that are resubmitted will be subject to the same late penalties applied to the original grade.

If you have processed your film and discovered that the work is totally unacceptable (no exposure, over/underexposed, operat or error, etc.), hand in your film anyway to avoid late penalties. You will be given a reshoot date for that assignment. If you know that an assignment is going to be late, please come talk to m e, and we may be able to make new arrangements.

All assingments must be completed and turned in to pass the class.

Grading:

There are seven assignments, plus a final project, two quizzes, and an exam for this class. The assignments and quizzes will count as 50% of your grade, the final project 45% and the exams 5%. It is important that y ou put equal time and effort into all elements of the class. Although your projects are expected to reflect an aptitude for techniques discussed in class, grading will be based on the a rt work as a whole. Technical quality, composition, conceptual resolve, and presentation are all crucial elements.

Grading Scale:
The A Project = Outstanding Skills
  • Work exceeds expected quality in technical detail and artistic content.
  • Superior presentation
  • Submitted on Time

  • Work exceeds expected quality, but still leaves room for improvement.
  • Presentation is neat.
The C Project = Average Skills
  • Quality of work meets expected level of technical competence.

The D Project = Poor Skills

Reshoots must be handed in within two weeks of the return of your original submission, and all assignments must be turned in by the last d ay of the term. Original work must have been submitted on time for it to be considered for resubmission. When you turn in a reshoot, please submit the original project as well.
