Delaware volleyball team wins New Orleans title
UD’s Michelle LaLonde was named the tournament most valuable player as the Hens won the Four Seasons by Sheraton Invitational in New Orleans.
8:10 a.m., Sept. 4, 2007--The University of Delaware volleyball team has won its second tournament championship, capturing the Four Points by Sheraton Invitational in New Orleans with victories over Alcorn State University, Nicholls State University and the University of New Orleans.

The Fightin' Blue Hens, who have now won seven straight matches to open the season, earlier won the Delaware Invitational.

UD opened the tournament with a 3-0 victory over Alcorn State, winning 30-6, 30-10 and 30-14. The 30 total points surrendered by the Hens were the fewest allowed since rally scoring was implemented in 2001.

Also, the Hens had 22 service aces, a new school record. Freshman Jess Chason, making just the second appearance of her career, had a team-high six aces and added 11 assists. Colleen Walsh had 12 kills and four aces, Megan Welch had 29 assists and Stephanie Barry had 11 digs.

UD went on the defeat Nicholls State 3-0, winning 30-13, 30-25 and 30-17, and host New Orleans 3-1, winning 30-20, 29-31, 30-17 and 30-22.

Against Nicholls State, Walsh had nine kills and Michelle LaLonde had eight, Welch had 27 assists and Barry had 12 digs. Against, New Orleans, Walsh had 21 kills and LaLonde had 18, Welch had 49 assists and Barry had 30 digs.

LaLonde, a sophomore, was named the tournament most valuable players, and Barry and Molly Rand joined her on the all-tournament team. For the tournament, LaLonde had 33 kills, 14 digs and nine blocks. Barry had 53 digs and 10 aces and Rand had 21 kills, eight digs and four blocks.

Walsh also had a strong showing in New Orleans, leading the Hens with 42 kills. Against Nicholls State, she became UD's all-time leader in career attacks with 3,873. Joanna Dusza was the previous record holder, tallying 3,859 from 1995-99.

The Hens will return to action with a game at Delaware State University in Dover at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 4.
