Delaware’s Berry reaches Maryland tennis semis

9:42 a.m., Sept. 24, 2007--University of Delaware sophomore Elena Berry advanced to the Flight B singles semifinals at the Maryland Invitational tennis tournament Saturday with a 6-4, 6-3 second-round triumph over Kaitlyn Ritchie of the University of Missouri. Berry recorded one of the Fightin' Blue Hens' six singles wins over the final two days of competition in the tournament at College Park, Md..

Berry was the only Delaware semifinalist in any flight. In Sunday's semi, she fell to Jil Hastenrath of Auburn University, 6-1, 6-1.

UD freshman Ivana Petrich held her own in a tough Flight C field, scoring a pair of consolation victories. Sophomore Kristen Mueller did the same in Flight D, where she outlasted Ashley Young of Miami (Ohio) University in a 12-10 third-set tiebreak.

With a 5-7, 6-1, 10-3 defeat of Nova Southeasern's Elena Vahl in Flight C, senior Brittany Barsky tied Liz Perlow for fifth on UD's all-time wins list at 55. She also teamed with Petrich to notch the Hens' lone doubles victory over the final two days.

In the first day of the invitational, UD's Susan Pollack won her Flight A singles match and captured a doubles match to set a new school record for career doubles wins. Pollack improved to 4-1 on the season at singles and won her 53rd career singles match to tie Elly Giese (1998-02) for sixth place all-time at Delaware. Also, she became the all-time career doubles win leader with 57, breaking the mark of 56 held by Rebecca Fearins (1993-98) and Karen Greenstein (1996-2000).
