5:11 p.m., Sept. 28, 2007--Screenings for UD's Gender in International Films fall series are set for 3:35 p.m., Wednesdays in October, in 102 Gore Hall. The film showings are open to the public and also may be taken as a one-credit pass/fail course (WOMS 290.010).
Scheduled films are listed below.
Delwende (Burkina Faso), Oct. 3-- This movie is based on a true story of a woman driven out of her West African village after being accused of being a witch and reveals the existence of “witch villages,” where women so labeled are banished.
Ma Vie En Rose or My Life in Pink (France), Oct. 10-- This movie tells the story of a little girl born into the body of a little boy. As the story unfolds, we meet Ludovic, whose parents are distraught and cannot agree what is best to do.
Offside (Iran), Oct. 17-- Writer and director Jafar Panahi highlights the effects of gender segregation in Iran via a world cup-qualifier soccer match between Iran and Bahrain, in which women are considered “offside.” The rules prohibit women in the stands, seated next to males, so diehard female fans must masquerade as men and try to sneak in.
Goyangireul Butakhae or Take Care of My Cat (South Korea), Oct. 24-- This film offers a rare glimpse into the lives of five young women friends in South Korea. Their different personalities and circumstances slowly take shape and reveal the effects of family and social class circumstances.
Quinceanera (U.S. Mexican-American culture), Oct. 31-- This coming-of-age movie is located in the changing community of Echo Park, where rents are skyrocketing as “yuppies” move in and housing is scarce for long-time inhabitants. When 14-year-old Magdalena's situation erupts into an explosive fight, she is forced to move in with her great uncle Tomas, who has already taken in her brother.
