With the loss, the Fightin' Blue Hens fell to 1-3. They will return to action this weekend in the Panera Bread Challenge to be played at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga. UD will face the University of Louisville at 5 p.m., Friday, Nov. 23, and either UT Chattanooga or Murray State University on Saturday, Nov. 24.
Against Boston College, UD senior guard Kyle DeHaven returned to action following a hand injury and scored a team-high 11 points and added five assists. DeHaven tied the game at 51-51 with 12 seconds left when she calmly sank two free throws after being fouled after her steal of an inbounds pass seconds earlier.
Following a timeout, Boston College's Ayla Brown took a three-point shot from the left corner with two seconds left. The shot went long but freshman forward Stefanie Murphy was there to get the rebound and laid the ball back in just before the buzzer sounded for the win.
UD's Courtney Irving added a season-high 10 points and sophomore Corinthia Benison collected a career-high 9 points off the bench. The Hens shot just 26.7 percent from the field, the team's third straight sub 27 percent shooting performance.
“They are so big and we didn't box out,” UD Head Coach Tina Martin, whose young team has lost three straight for the first time since the 2003-04 season, said. “We did everything else we needed to do to win the game. We gave ourselves a chance to win versus an Atlantic Coast Conference team and all we had to do was rebound. That is our biggest problem right now.”
