May 7, 2008--Evelyn Satinoff, who served as chairperson of UD's Department of Psychology from 1993-2000, died Jan. 29 of lung cancer.
Before coming to UD in 1993, Dr. Satinoff was on the faculty from 1973-93 of the University of Illinois, Urbana, Champaign, where she was a professor in the departments of psychology and physiology and biophysics, becoming Jubilee Professor of Liberal Arts and Science Emerita in 1993. At Illinois, she received the Beckman Award for Research three times. During her career, she was a visiting professor at Tel Aviv University and at New York Hospital Cornell Medical Center.
Dr. Satinoff was a leading researcher in thermoregulation in terms of fevers and infections, sleep and wakefulness and cognitive deficits in aging. She served as editor of the two sections of the American Journal of Physiology, the Journal of Comparative and Physiological Psychology and Infant Behavior and Development.
A graduate of Brooklyn College, Dr. Satinoff received her doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Satinoff is survived by her sister, Harriet Sifre, and two sons, Daniel and David Teitelbaum, and grandchildren Jacob and Maxine.
An endowment has been established through the UD Development Office for the “Evelyn Satinoff Memorial Lecture in Evolutionary Biology and Physiological Psychology.” Memorial gifts may be sent to Martha Mitchell, University Development, George Evans House, University of Delaware, Newark DE 19716.
