Bayhawks select Manney in MLL collegiate draft
UD’s Brett Manney has been selected in the MLL draft.
2:22 p.m., May 29, 2008--University of Delaware senior midfielder Brett Manney, who was rated one of the top defensive midfielders in the nation this season, was selected with the 31st overall pick by the Washington Bayhawks in the Major League Lacrosse collegiate draft held Wednesday.

A native of Newtown, Pa., Manney was the first selection in the fourth round and Washington's second pick overall.

Manney was a four-year standout for the Fightin' Blue Hens as a defensive midfielder, appearing in 50 games with four starts and contributing five goals and five assists. Defensively, he collected 87 ground balls and caused 25 turnovers during his career. This past season he played in 14 games and had two goals and one assist to go with 31 ground balls and eight caused turnovers.

He played a key role in leading Delaware to the Colonial Athletic Association title and a berth in the NCAA national semifinals in 2007. Earlier this month he received the UD Student Service for Athletes Outstanding Contributor Award for his community service efforts. He is an English major with a minor in journalism.

Manney joins nine other former Blue Hens in MLL this summer. Chris Collins will be a teammate as a goalkeeper with Washington, and other UD players in the league are attack Matt Alrich of the Boston Cannons, defender Rob Smith and midfielder Dan Deckelbaum of the Chicago Machine, attack John Grant Jr., midfielder Jordan Hall and face-off specialist Alex Smith of the Rochester Rattlers, and midfielders Jason Motta and Bryan Tingle of the Philadelphia Barrage.

Grant currently ranks second in the league in scoring with 13 points while Alrich is tied for third with 10 points.
