Slovak ties saves mark as Blue Hens top VCU
UD relief pitcher David Slovak tied the school record with his 18th career save.
8:26 a.m., May 19, 2008--The University of Delaware defeated Virginia Commonwealth University 5-2 on Thursday in Richmond, Va., in the last game of the season for the Fightin' Blue Hens.

The remaining two games of the Colonial Athletic Association series were canceled because of foul weather.

The victory was a landmark for UD senior closer David Slovak, who earned his 18th career save to tie the all-time school record set from 1994-97 by Scott Gellert.

Starting pitcher Mike McGuire (6-5) got the win, working seven innings and allowing just one earned run. He struck out seven batters.

UD first baseman Ryan Cuneo had two hits and left fielder Jared Olson drove in a pair of runs. Olson had one of four doubles for the Blue Hens, joining shortstop Kyle Davis, designated hitter Chris Nehl and third baseman Bill Merkler.

The Blue Hens finished the season 22-31 overall and 11-17 in the CAA.
