Delaware’s Marquez is All-East in 400 meters
UD’s Cristine Marquez has won All-East honors in the 400 meters.
8:39 a.m., March 10, 2008--University of Delaware sophomore Cristine Marquez turned in an All-East performance by finishing fourth in the 400-meter run at the IC4A and ECAC indoor championships held Sunday afternoon in Boston. In all, UD athletes posted five top 20 finishes in the two meets.

The Delaware women finished 36th in the ECAC team standings and the men finished 47th in the IC4A.

Marquez earned All-East honors by finishing fourth in the 400 meters with a time of 55.54. She finished eighth in the event last season as a freshman and her finish Sunday was the best by a member of the UD women's team this decade.

Marquez advanced to the finals after a sixth place finish in the preliminaries Saturday when she broke her own school record with a time of 55.45. She also finished 12th in the 200 meters Saturday with a career-best time of 24.72, the second best time in UD history, but did not advance to the finals.

Marquez later joined senior Asha Quant and freshmen Kristi Cox and Kayla Hennessy in the 4x400-meter relay finals, in which the Blue Hens placed were disqualified for dropping the baton on the first leg of the race. The Hens had advanced to the finals after a third place finish in the preliminaries Saturday when they ran to a school record time of 3:45.44, shattering the mark of 3:50.27 set by Brittany Wright, Kristen Frustillo, Tyechia Smith and Mandy Stille in 2004.

Also for the UD women Sunday, junior Kelli McDonald was 11th in the pole vault with a height of 11 feet, 7.75 inches, junior Amanda Marshall finished 13th in the weight throw with a toss of 51-3, and junior Laura Chirico placed 16th in the pole vault with a leap of 11-7.75.

The UD men had just one competitor Sunday with freshman John Viotto finishing 21st in the shot put with toss of 48-4.75.

The meet concluded the 2008 indoor season for the Blue Hen track and field team. The outdoor season will get underway Saturday, March 22, at the Towson Invitational.
