Blue Hen baseball team loses two at Maryland

8:49 a.m., March 13, 2008--The University of Delaware baseball team has lost 10 straight games following a pair of setbacks at the University of Maryland. The Fightin' Blue Hens lost 5-1 on Tuesday and 8-6 on Wednesday.

In Tuesday's loss, the Blue Hens had nine hits but could plate just one run. Catcher Ryan Reed had three hits and Adam Tsakonas had two. Infielder Alex Buchholz had one hit and one run batted in. Starting pitcher Dan Richardon took the loss, working five innings an giving up six hits and three earned runs.

In Wednesday's loss, the Blue Hens fell behind early when starting pitcher Corey Crispell gave up six runs, three of those earned, in three innings of work. They battled back to tie the game 6-6 in the top of the seventh but gave up two runs in the bottom of that inning.

UD designated hitter Bill Merkler had four hits, including a home run, drove in two runs and scored a run. Buchholz had a pair of hits and Tsakonas had a double. Relief pitcher Alex Dalsey took the loss.

UD is now 3-11 overall and 0-3 in the Colonial Athletic Association. They will return to action with a CAA series against Northeastern University March 14-16 at Bob Hannah Stadium. Games times are 2:30 p.m. on Friday, 1 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
