Blue Hen track teams compete in New York

8:19 a.m., Feb. 11, 2008--University of Delaware indoor track and field competitors had several top 10 finishes at the New Balance Collegiate Indoor Track and Field Invitational held this weekend at the New York Armory. The meet included some of the top teams in the nation, including Texas, Tennessee, Arkansas, Florida State, LSU, Villanova and North Carolina.

UD women's competitors had four top 10 finishes, led by the 4x400-meter relay team of Cristine Marquez, Kristi Cox, Kayla Hennessy and Asha Quant that won its event with a time of 3:50.45, less than one second off the school record.

Also, the women's distance medley relay team of Kellyn Wright, Cox, Marquez and Christina Antonopoulos finished sixth in a time of 12:10.14, Briana Gray finished sixth in the high jump at 5 feet, 2.25 inches, and Kelli McDonald finished seventh in the pole vault at 11 feet, 9.75 inches.

Other top performances were by the 4x800-meter relay team of Wright, Karen Mandrachia, Stephanie Taylor and Julia Somers, which finished 11th (9:34.64); Amanda Marshall, who finished 13th in the weight throw (52-8.75); Laura Chirico, who finished 16th in the pole vault (10-10); and Quant, who finished 19th in the long jump (17-9.75).

For the UD men's team, the distance medley relay team of Will Jurkowski, Adam Cornelisse, Mike Zeberkiewicz and Brad Dodson finished fifth in a time of 10:16.83 and the 4x400-meter relay squad of Nick Morrisey, Jeremy Simkins, Alex Tingue and Jurkowski finished eighth with a time of 3:25.23.

Other top finishes for the UD men were Conrad Rapp, who finished 16th in the pole vault (14-9); Mike Ward, who finished 22nd in the 5,000 meters (15:47.28); and John Viotto, who finished 25th in the shot put (50-3.25).

The UD indoor track and field teams will return to action on Friday, Feb. 15, at the Lafayette Invitational at the New York Armory.
