Feb. 5, 2008--Charles F. Eastman, 87, of Newark, Del., died on Jan. 27 at Calvert Manor Healthcare Center in Rising Sun, Md.

Born in Norristown, Pa., on July 20, 1920, Mr. Eastman was the son of the late Arthur Eastman and Helen Henkel Eastman. He was a 1939 graduate of Newark High School and later attended both Goldey-Beacom College and the University of Delaware.

Mr. Eastman served his country at the New Castle Army Airbase during World War II. He was employed with the University of Delaware for 29 years, retiring from the then College of Human Resources in July 1986. Active with the First Presbyterian Church of Newark since 1936, Mr. Eastman served as a deacon, usher, Stephen Minister and desk receptionist. He also assisted in the church's nursery and with Vacation Bible School for many years.

Mr. Eastman was involved with Boys Scouts of America for more than 50 years, both as a scout and as a scoutmaster. In 1960, was instrumental in founding the Newark Day Nursery. In later years, he became active in the Newark Historical Society and joined the Newark Senior Center, where he enjoyed taking a variety of classes, participating in Bible study, reading in the center's library, swimming and traveling with friends.

Although he never drove a car or married, Mr. Eastman had a bountiful life. He believed wholeheartedly in exercise--especially walking--and often remarked, "This is what keeps me in such good condition." Birding, hiking and camping also were favorite activities.

Mr. Eastman is survived by his brother, Arthur B. Eastman, and his wife, Emily, of Willow Street, Pa., and many good friends.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 16, at First Presbyterian Church of Newark, 292 West Main St., Newark, Del. Interment will be in the church's adjoining Remembrance Garden.
