The third concert in UD's 2007-08 Master Players Chamber Series will feature selections in celebration of Black History Month, ranging from popular opera arias to romantic cabaret favorites.
Brownlee, who rose to prominence six years ago as a bel canto tenor, is renowned for the timbre of his voice, his technical skill and his dynamic and engaging stage presence. He appears regularly with the world's most prominent opera companies, orchestras and presenting organizations.
In 2006, he won both the 2006 Richard Tucker and Marian Anderson Awards, a feat never before achieved by any artist in the same year. He has been called "an appealing stage performer with a bright, sweet and flexible voice" by a critic in The New York Times, and a critic in the Sunday Times of London called him "an astonishing technician who rightly brought the house down."
His recording, Italian Songs, on which he is accompanied by Katz, was selected as "Best of the Year--Recitals" by Opera News.
Katz, who is making his second appearance in the Master Players Chamber Series, is a sought-after piano accompanist, recognized widely for his collaborative style. He has partnered throughout his long career with some of the world's most esteemed voices, including Marilyn Horne, Frederica von Stade, José Carreras, Cecilia Bartoli, Kathleen Battle and Samuel Ramey.
He was named "Accompanist of the Year" by Musical America, and a critic at The Los Angeles Times wrote, "Martin Katz must surely be considered the dean of collaborative pianists."
In addition to the concert, a free one-hour master class led by Katz is set for 1:25 p.m., Friday, Feb. 22, in the Gore Recital Hall of the Louise and David Roselle Center for the Arts. Both events are cosponsored by UD's Department of Music and the Center for Black Culture in celebration of Black History Month.
The Master Players Chamber Series, under the direction of Xiang Gao, internationally renowned violinist and associate professor of music at UD, serves as a cultural resource for the University and surrounding communities. Now in its fourth year, the series has brought some of the world's most acclaimed classical musicians to campus.
