Passing game sharp in final preseason scrimmage
3:34 p.m., Aug. 17, 2007--Led by strong passing from quarterbacks Joe Flacco and Sean Scanlon, Delaware's offensive unit looked sharp in the team's second preseason scrimmage held Thursday, Aug. 16, at Delaware Stadium.

About 200 fans turned out to watch the Blue Hens run approximately 80 plays during the 90-minute scrimmage, the final of the preseason, where the offensive, defensive and special teams worked on plays involving goal-line defense, field goals and kickoff and punt coverage.

Scanlon hit Jon Heydt and Mark Mackey with TD passes of 70 yards and 30 yards respectively, while Flacco connected on scoring tosses of 20 yards and 10 yards to tight end Josh Baker, as well as a five-yard scoring pass to Kervin Michaud.

Kicker Jon Striefsky booted field goals of 42, 37 and 30 yards, while Tyrone Grant and Anthony Walters each came up with an interception.

Injured during the scrimmage were running back Jared Bradley, with a chip fracture in his pelvic bone which could result in a loss of action ranging from a few days to six weeks. Freshman defensive back Cody Cipalla suffered a lacerated finger, while junior fullback Matt Ruggiero will miss at least a week of action due to a concussion.

Not taking part in Thursday's scrimmage due to injuries were sophomore defensive end Matt Marcorelle (wrist), junior defensive end Ronald Talley (shoulder) and junior defensive back Karl Pope (ankle).

Delaware also announced that four players will be lost for the season due to preseason injuries. The players include:

  • Jerry Butler, sophomore running back (knee);
  • Scott von Duyke, redshirt freshman (knee ligament tear);
  • Durrell Clark-James, junior defensive back (wrist ligament tear); and
  • Eddie Lugo, freshman defensive back (shoulder tear).

Senior defensive end Mike Sothern has not practiced during preseason as a result of a foot injury and will most likely miss the entire season.

Delaware opens its regular season away against William & Mary on Thursday, Aug. 30. The Fightin' Blue Hens were ranked 19th in a Sports Network top 25 preseason poll earlier this week.
