UMBC defeats Delaware 6-1 in women’s tennis

8:26 a.m., April 15, 2008--The host University of Maryland Baltimore County defeated the University of Delaware 6-1 in a nonconference women's tennis match played Monday afternoon, snapping the Fightin' Blue Hens' five-match winning streak.

The Blue Hens had one victory in singles play, with freshman Courtney Fenimore defeating Alice Chen at No. 2 singles, and another in double play, with sophomore Elena Berry and freshman Ivana Petrich defeating Cornelia Carapcea and Joy Adewumi at No. 3 doubles.

In other singles matches, UD senior Susan Pollack fell to Ana Mungo at No. 1, Berry fell to Pascaline Cette at No. 3 and junior Amanda Campbell fell to Carapcea at No. 4.

UD senior Alexa Dragonette fell to Adewumi at No. 5 and Petrich lost a difficult battle with Emily Mannix at No. 6.

Both the UD men's and women's teams will compete in the Colonial Athletic Association championships to be held Thursday, April 17, through Sunday, April 20, at the Huntington Park Tennis Center in Newport News, Va.

The UD women's team is seeded fifth and will face the fourth seed, Georgia State University, at 3:30 p.m., Friday.

The UD men's team is seeded seventh and will face the tenth seed, George Mason University, at 2 p.m., Thursday. If the Blue Hens win, they will advance to face the second seeded College of William and Mary on Friday.
