YoUDee is named to All-South mascot team 11:24 a.m., Sept. 22, 2006--YoUDee, the University of Delaware's irrepressible Fightin' Blue Hens mascot, has been named to the All-South mascot team by the September issue of Southern Living magazine. The magazine cites YoUDee, Aubie from Auburn University, Smokey from the University of Tennessee, Red from Arkansas State University and Wildcat from the University of Kentucky on its All-South team. “The South boasts some of the most beloved, and most maligned, mascots in college athletics,” the magazine states. “They're cursed at, spit upon, and threatened. They have their ears pulled and their tails yanked. They're adored by kids and reviled by opponents. They attend every game, log thousands of personal appearances and sign autographs. They toil in anonymity, unable to confirm or deny that they were even at the game on Saturday. Yet being a mascot is the thrill of a lifetime.” This has been a big year for YoUDee, who earlier was inducted into the national Mascot Hall of Fame as a member of the first class in the college division. The big bird was inducted alongside Clutch the Bear of the NBA's Houston Rockets, made famous by former YoUDee Bob Boudwin, BE '97. “We are thrilled that Southern Living has recognized the hard work put in by students on collegiate mascot teams, and also that the magazine featured full-color photographs of the mascots it honored, including our own YoUDee,” Sharon Harris, director of the UD mascot program, said. |
