Meany, Hens victorious at Hofstra Invitational

UD’s P.J. Meany won the men’s race at the Hofstra Invitational.

9:34 a.m., Sept. 11, 2006--University of Delaware senior P.J. Meany won the men's race as the men's and women's cross country teams opened the season with championships at the Hofstra University Invitational on Saturday morning in Hempstead, N.Y.

The UD men had the top 10 finishers as the Fightin' Blue Hens totaled 15 points to easily win the title. Hofstra finished second with 56 points, while Wagner was third with 78 points and New Jersey Institute of Technology was fourth with 107 points. The UD women finished with 25 points, ahead of Hofstra with 48 points, St. John's with 81 points and Wagner with 86 points.

Meany won the five-kilometer men's race in 15:24.86, finishing ahead of teammates Kyle Schmid in 15:27.94 and Gregg Cantwell in 15:45.72. Tyler Mayforth was fourth in 15:46.86, Brad Dodson fifth in 15:52.21 and Chris Bourke sixth in 16:01.40.

Mike Zeberkiewicz finished seventh in 16:10.33, Tim Brock eighth in 16:15.73, Matt O'Brian ninth in 16:17.54 and Alex Gambogi 10th in 16:21.36.

Junior Colleen O'Brien, who finished third in the five-kilometer race in 18:39.49, led the UD women. Julia Somers finished fourth in 18:50.09, Christina Antonopoulos fifth in 19:11.98, Jessica Leitsch sixth in 19:29.736, Liz Paul seventh in 19:40.65 and Brooke Maguire eighth in 19:41.37.

Yianna Antonopoulos finished 11th in 20:04.52 for the Hens, while Annie Kowtuniak finished 14th in 20:05.59.

Both UD teams will return to action on Saturday when they host the Delaware Invitational meet at White Clay Creek State Park. The men's race will start at 10:30 a.m. and the women's race at 11:15 a.m.
