Women’s tennis team tops St. Joseph’s, 7-0

Amanda Campbell was among UD winners in a 7-0 victory over St. Joseph’s.

9:55 a.m., Sept. 22, 2006--The University of Delaware women's tennis team dropped just one set as the Fightin' Blue Hens defeated St. Joseph's University 7-0 at the Delaware Field House tennis courts on Thursday.

Susan Pollack and Amanda Campbell posted an 8-1 win over Stephania Velazquez and Erika Guers at No. 1 doubles to improve to 7-0 this season and earn their 29th career win, setting a new school record for doubles wins by a duo. Pollack and Campbell, who are now 29-6 in their career, eclipsed the previous record of 28-12 set by Kristin Wasniewski and Rachel Dencker from 1997-2000.

Alexa Dragonette and Julie Schiller recorded an 8-1 victory over Gina DiGiacomo and Marisa Donelson at No. 2, while Liz Perlow and Sari Shuster defeated Krysta Contino and Lauren Kuhmerker 8-2 at No. 3 as the Hens took the doubles point.

Pollack improved to 7-0 on the season with a 6-3, 7-6 (2) win over Velazquez at No. 1 singles, while Campbell needed three sets to post a 6-2, 4-6, 10-2 victory over Guers at No. 2. Perlow defeated DiGiacomo 6-3, 7-5 at No. 3 to move into ninth place at UD with her 47th career win, while Dragonette captured her team-high ninth win of the season with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Donelson at No. 4.

Shuster blanked Contino 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 to win her 51st career match, tied for sixth all-time at Delaware, while Brittany Barsky recorded a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Kuhmerker at No. 6.

UD will face Villanova University at 3 p.m., Tuesday, at the Delaware Field House courts.
