Women’s soccer splits weekend CAA matches

Alli D’Amico opened the scoring in a 3-1 victory over Old Dominion.

10:57 a.m., Sept. 25, 2006--The University of Delaware women's soccer team split a pair of Colonial Athletic Association matches this weekend, defeating Old Dominion University 3-1 on Friday and falling 4-2 to the College of William & Mary on Sunday at the Delaware Mini-Stadium.

The Fightin' Blue Hens (6-2-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference) handed Old Dominion its first loss of the season with junior midfielder Alli D'Amico opening the scoring just over one minute into the game. Following a free kick, D'Amico gained control of a loose ball inside the box and ripped it into the back of the net.

UD scored two more first-half goals, with junior midfielder Emily Sammis heading home a ball from freshman Melissa Kilker and senior forward Linsday Boyd tallying her sixth goal of the season late in the half. Old Dominion put pressure on in the second half but was able to get on the board only with an own goal. UD goalkeeper Bonnie Mills had seven saves.

The Hens carried the momentum gained Friday into the first half of Sunday's game against conference-leading William & Mary, building a 2-0 halftime lead on goals by sophomore midfielder Kasie Shover and senior defender Lauren Petchel. However, William & Mary came back strong in the second half, scoring four goals as heavy rains soaked the pitch. Mills had four saves.

UD will take to the road for a pair of CAA matches this weekend, traveling to Virginia Commonwealth University for a match at 7 p.m., Friday, and to James Madison University for a match at 1 p.m., Sunday. VCU is 6-2-2 overall and 2-0 in the CAA and James Madison is 4-5-1 and 0-1-1 in the conference.
