Status of Women annual report issued

9:32 a.m., Sept. 7, 2006--UD's Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) has issued its 2005-06 annual report on women faculty and students on campus and commission activities, awards and programs during the year. Pamela Cook, professor of mathematical sciences, serves as CSW chairperson.

This past year, CSW has collaborated with UD's Commission to Promote Racial and Cultural Diversity to improve the climate on campus for all women and to further the number of women and under-represented minorities among tenured and tenure-track faculty. The commission supports a faculty mentoring initiative and enhancement of recruitment activities.

The report points out that the percentage of tenured and tenure-track women continues to rise, showing an increase of 6.9 percent over the past 10 years. The report also includes a table on the proportion of female students and full-time faculty by department in the fall 2005.

Women in Science and Engineering (WISE), a CSW subcommittee of women in fields related to science and engineering, is involved in increasing the number of women faculty in those fields.

The commission also met with women student leaders for their input and suggestions.
