Talk on offshore wind power Thursday in Lewes

4:24 p.m., Sept. 19, 2006--Amardeep Dhanju and Phillip Whitaker, two UD graduate students in the College of Marine and Earth Studies, will give a talk titled “Assessing Wind Energy: Its Place in the U.S. Power Mix” at 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 21, at the Hugh R. Sharp Campus in Lewes.

The final lecture in the annual Ocean Currents Lecture Series sponsored by the College of Marine and Earth Sciences, Dhanju and Whitaker's talk will focus on harnessing wind energy to meet the demand currently being served by coal and petroleum.

The talk will cover wind power basics and give an overview of wind turbine technology. Comparisons between wind and other renewable energy sources also will be explored.

Dhanju and Whitaker will examine issues that affect wind power usage in the United States, including grid stability, cost and the development of a transmission infrastructure.

The lecture is free and open to the public, but seating is limited and reservations are required. To reserve a seat, or to find out more about the event, call (302) 645-4279.
