Blue Hen Weekend: A spike in home action

1:57 p.m., Sept. 28, 2006--University of Delaware athletic facilities will be in heavy use this weekend, with home games featuring the volleyball, men's soccer and field hockey teams. There also will be a home football game.

The 13-1 Fightin' Blue Hens volleyball team will return to action with a Colonial Athletic Association match against the University of North Carolina Wilmington at 7 p.m., Friday, at Barbara Viera Court in the Carpenter Sports Building. The Hens will remain on home court for conference matches against Georgia State University at 1 p.m., Saturday, and against Towson University at 7 p.m., Tuesday.

The Hens ripped off 12 consecutive wins, by far the best start in the history of the volleyball program, before falling 3-0 to perennial power Hofstra University last week. UNC Wilmington is 7-10 overall and 0-5 in the conference and Georgia State is 6-8 overall and 3-2 in the CAA. Towson is 11-5 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

UD junior setter Megan Welch is ranked 10th in NCAA Division I with 13.24 assists per game and junior hitter Colleen Walsh is 21st with 4.83 kills per game.

The 3-2-2 UD men's soccer team, which has seen a dramatic turnaround this season, will face Virginia Commonwealth University in a CAA match at 7 p.m., Friday, at the Delaware Mini-Stadium. The Hens will remain on home turf for a game against James Madison University at 2 p.m., Sunday.

Virginia Commonwealth is 3-6 overall and 1-1 in the CAA while James Madison is tied atop the conference standings at 7-1 overall and 2-0 in the CAA. The Dukes are ranked No. 22 nationally by Soccer America magazine and feature senior midfielder Kurt Morsink who is third in points at 2.67 per game in the latest NCAA Division I statistics.

The 4-6 UD field hockey team will be in CAA action, as well, taking on Virginia Commonwealth at 7 p.m., Friday, at Rullo Stadium. The Rams are 1-8 overall and 0-1 in the conference. After that game, the Hens will take to the road to face Northeastern University in a conference contest at 2 p.m., Sunday, in Boston. Northeastern is 4-5 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

The Hens, who have played a very difficult schedule and compete in one of the nation's best field hockey conferences, received eight votes in the most recent National Field Hockey Coaches Association NCAA Division I poll. Fellow conference member Old Dominion University is ranked No. 3 in the nation.

The 2-1 UD football team will face its stiffest challenge of the early season, battling the top-ranked University of New Hampshire at 7 p.m., Saturday, at Tubby Raymond Field at Delaware Stadium.

The 6-2-2 UD women's soccer team will be on the road for a pair of CAA games, traveling to Virginia Commonwealth on Friday and James Madison on Sunday. The cross-country teams will compete in the Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh University.
