4:54 p.m., Sept. 11, 2006--The day was bright and beautiful as some 4,000-plus walkers gathered on the Wilmington Riverfront, Sunday, Sept. 10, at the start of the 2006 American Heart Association's Delaware Heart Walk.

“It was a gorgeous day and an unbelievable turnout,” Marianne Carter, UD Heart Walk co-coordinator, said. “This year, the UD team wore yellow T-shirts, and when the 4,000 walkers took off, there was a sea of yellow. I was really proud to see how many University community members turned out for this worthwhile community fund-raiser. UD's participation was very visible to all in attendance," she said.

Carter said UD mascot YoUDee was “a big hit, as always.”

Although Carter and co-coordinator, Richie Holland, human resources manager, were impressed with the turnout and number of UD walkers, they said they can't be sure how many faculty, staff and students participated for several weeks until the Delaware Heart Association has tallied registrations and pledges.

Last year, there were 142 walkers on the University's team, and UD raised more than $14,831.

“Heart disease affects so many of us. This turnout just underscores how informed UD employees and students are and how willing they are to do what it takes to fund research that could lead to a safer life for us all,” Holland said. He said he is proud of UD's dedication to this cause.
