Delaware volleyball team wins UWGB tournament

UD’s Kelly Gibson was named the most valuable player at the University of Wisconsin Green Bay volleyball tournament.

11:58 a.m., Sept. 5, 2006--The University of Delaware volleyball team won three matches to capture the University of Wisconsin Green Bay tournament championship over Labor Day weekend. The Fightin' Blue Hens defeated Kent State University 3-0 on Friday and Drake University 3-0 and Wisconsin Green Bay 3-1 on Saturday to win the title.

With the victories, UD improved to 7-0 on the season and tied the 1976 team for the best start in history. The Hens will return to action with a match at the University of Maryland Baltimore County tonight at 6 p.m. They will then begin Colonial Athletic Association play at home with games against George Mason University at 7 p.m., Friday, and against James Madison University at 1 p.m., Saturday, at Barbara Viera Court at the Carpenter Sports Building.

In the championship match victory over Wisconsin Green Bay, the Hens won 29-31, 30-22, 30-27 and 30-19. Sophomore Kelly Gibson, who was named the tournament's most valuable player, had 21 kills and 21 digs.

The Hens defeated Drake 30-18, 30-26 and 30-27, with sophomore Sue Wiker posting a career-high 14 kills. Gibson had 13 kills and 13 digs.

On the opening day of the tournament, UD defeated Kent State 30-25, 26-30, 30-28 and 30-23. Junior Colleen Walsh had 27 kills, junior Megan Welch had 69 assists and Gibson had 24 kills and 32 digs.

Along with Gibson, two other Hens were named to the all-tournament team. They were freshman Michelle LaLonde and senior Heather Ranck.
