UD Marching Band’s new season anything but routine

The UD Marching Band held its first sit-down rehearsal in the 5,000-square-foot orchestra hall in the new Center for the Arts on Sept. 1. “The Marching Band goes inside during bad weather, as well as when we are learning new music for a new production,” Heidi Sarver, UD Marching Band director, said.

11:59 a.m., Sept. 6, 2006--After welcoming the Class of 2010 to UD during recent New Student Convocation, the University of Delaware Marching Band is tuning up for its first halftime performance at the Blue Hens' home opener against West Chester University on Saturday, Sept. 9.

The 300-member unit, which practices three days a week during the football season, plans to offer a varied selection of performance tunes for fans this year, Heidi Sarver, director of the UD Marching Band, said.

“We will be trying to cover as many musical eras and genres as possible,” Sarver said. “We hope to provide something enjoyable for all the fans who come to UD football games.”

Sarver said that numbers for the opening show include “Bat Out of Hell/Paradise by the Dashboard Light” by Meat Loaf, “La Suerte De Los Tontos” by Stan Kenton and the “1812 Overture” by Tchaikovsky.

“While we are still deciding upon selections for the second show, fans also will hear music by John Philip Sousa and Creedence Clearwater Revival at various times during the season,” Sarver said.

New this year, Sarver said, will be some special guest performers at a few halftime and postgame shows.

“It is something that the band has never incorporated into their shows before,” Sarver said. “Beyond that, we are keeping it as a surprise.”

The UD Marching Band also has been busy purchasing new instruments, Sarver said.

“We were fortunate to be able to replace the instruments for the entire front percussion section, as well as purchase eight new sousaphones and 16 new mellophones,” Sarver said. “The final eight sousaphones will be replaced this spring, along with 16 baritones.”

Sarver said that future projects include the recording of the UD Marching Band's third CD, which the band hopes to record in the new Puglisi Orchestra Hall in the Center for the Arts.

The 5,000-square-foot Puglisi Orchestra Hall is designed for multiple uses, including meetings, catered events and as a rehearsal space for the UD Marching Band.

“The orchestra hall is equipped for audio/video playback, so for the first time in my tenure at UD, the entire band will be able to view their performances each week,” Sarver said. “We are currently in the beginning stages of production for the CD, and the tentative release date is for fall 2007.”
