Police arrest suspect in 2003 sexual assault of student

8:21 p.m., Sept. 16, 2006--Newark Police have arrested Ernie Carletti, 31, of Elkton, Md., for a 2003 crime in which a 19-year-old UD student was abducted at gunpoint and sexually assaulted.

Early in the morning of May 22, 2003, the woman was waiting to meet a friend when she was abducted at gunpoint from the area of the 7-11 Store and Continental Court Apartments on South Chapel Street in Newark. She was blindfolded and bound before being transported to a separate location where she was sexually assaulted. Hours later, she was released in the area of West Main Street.

After obtaining an arrest warrant for Carletti, Newark detectives alerted Cecil County Sheriff's deputies, who subsequently obtained search warrants for Carletti's residence in Elkton. Newark detectives and a representative from the Delaware Department of Justice assisted the Cecil County Sheriff's deputies in the search of Carletti's residence.

Carletti faces six counts of first degree rape, one count of first degree kidnapping and possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony. He has been charged as a fugitive from Delaware and is currently being held at the Cecil County Detention Center, where he awaits an extradition hearing.

Detectives are currently pursuing additional leads, and the investigation is continuing.
