UD women’s soccer team tops Morehead, Marshall

UD’s Melissa Kilker scored two goals in a 5-0 victory over Marshall University.

11:55 a.m., Sept. 5, 2006--The University of Delaware women's soccer team remains unbeaten after winning two games in the Thundering Herd Nike Invitational tournament held Labor Day weekend at Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va. The Fightin' Blue Hens blanked Morehead (Ky.) State University 2-0 on Friday and host Marshall 5-0 on Sunday.

UD is 4-0 and off to its best start since 1994, when the Hens opened the season with five consecutive wins. The team will return to action this weekend as host of the Delaware Blue Hen Adidas Classic tournament to be played Friday and Sunday at the Delaware Mini-Stadium.

The tournament will open at 5 p.m. Friday with a game between Lehigh University and the University of Montana. At 7:30 p.m., UD will take the field against Yale University. Action will resume Sunday, with Yale facing Montana at 11:30 a.m. and the Hens taking on Lehigh at 2 p.m.

In the 5-0 victory over Marshall, UD got two goals from freshman forward Melissa Kilker. Kilker opened the scoring on an unassisted goal 14:30 into the contest, then found the net again with just over one minute left in the contest when she finished on a long pass from junior Kendall Lytwynec.

Also scoring for the Hens were junior Lindsay James, also assisted by Lytwynec, sophomore Kasie Shover and senior Lindsay Boyd, who headed home a free kick by sophomore Dana Rodgers. Senior goalkeeper Bonnie Mills made four saves and posted her third shutout of the season.

The 2-0 victory over Morehead State was the 300th victory in the history of the UD women's soccer program, which played its first varsity game in 1990. Goals were by Shover and Boyd, who tapped in a cross by Kilker. Mills had five saves in the shutout.
