SigEp president attends leadership conference

Senior Norbert Garbisch

11:36 a.m., Sept. 5, 2006--Senior Norbert Garbisch, president of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity at the University of Delaware, attended the 2006 Sigma Phi Epsilon Frank J. Ruck Leadership Institute, a five-day training program on values-based leadership, held July 12-16, at the College of William and Mary, in Williamsburg, Va.

Attended by 131 students selected from across the nation, the conference focused on the fraternity's “Balanced Man Ideal of Sound Mind and Sound Body,” and the role of the fraternity in promoting service, academic excellence, and contributing to the collective good of the university experience.

Participants were challenged to identify their core values and to develop mechanisms and a vision to express those values. Garbisch said he learned new leadership skills in identifying and carrying out goals and motivating others, and got different perspectives and ideas from interacting with students from schools from California to New York.

He said Sigma Phi Epsilon, which has 58 members at UD and an active alumni group, has made strides in the past few years. The fraternity raised $7,800 for the YouthAIDS organization and has performed community service at the Delaware Food Bank, Adopt-A-Street program and at the Newark Community Clean-Up Day, among other projects. The fraternity sponsors cultural and social events for members and alumni.

“In UD's chapter assessment program, the fraternity has earned four perfect scores and was named Chapter of the Year,” Garbisch said. “Our goal is to balance social, academic and community service, and we are looking forward to the future when we have a chapter house on campus.”
