Robbery on Main Street results in apprehension

6:58 p.m., Sept. 28, 2006--A man is in custody and facing charges of second-degree robbery after he allegedly snatched a purse from a woman walking along Main Street and attempted to flee with it before bystanders ran him down, according to Newark Police.

The incident occurred about 11:50 a.m., Thursday, on the sidewalk in front of 94 East Main Street, and police identified the suspect as Christopher Corey Leonzio, 41, of Newark.

Police said Leonzio approached the victim and attempted to grab her purse. After a brief struggle, he got the purse and fled the area on foot. During the incident, a friend of the victim began screaming for help, which got the attention of several men nearby who began chasing the defendant and were able to apprehend and detain him until Newark Police arrived.

Leonzio was taken into police custody and transported to the Newark Police Department, where warrants were prepared. He is currently awaiting arraignment before the Justice of the Peace Court. The victim was not injured in the incident.
