Danaher, Young goals lift men’s soccer team

A goal by UD’s Paul Danaher helped lead the Hens past William & Mary.

10:55 a.m., Sept. 25, 2006--Goals by freshman midfielder Paul Danaher and junior forward T.C. Young lifted the University of Delaware men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory at the College of William & Mary in a Colonial Athletic Association match played Sunday afternoon. The victory was UD's first in nine meetings with William & Mary.

The Fightin' Blue Hens (3-2-2 overall, 1-1 in the conference) took the lead 6:38 into the second half when Danaher found the net off an assist from Sobhan Tadjalli. Just 15 minutes later, Young put home a corner kick off the foot of Tadjalli to make it 2-0. UD goalkeeper Taylor Thames had seven saves in his third shutout of the season.

On Friday at Old Dominion University, the Hens opened conference play with a 2-0 loss against one of the top-ranked teams in the nation. Old Dominion entered weekend play ranked No. 10 in NCAA Division I in the College Soccer News poll and No. 13 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). UD goalkeeper Jonathan Curry-Edwards faced 24 shots and had 11 saves, a season high for the Hens. Tadjalli had three shots and Danaher two for UD.

The Hens will continue CAA play with a pair of games this weekend at the Delaware Mini-Stadium. UD will face Virginia Commonwealth University at 7 p.m., Friday, and James Madison University at 2 p.m., Sunday. VCU is 3-6 overall and 1-1 in conference and James Madison is 7-1 overall and 2-0 in conference.
