Delaware men’s soccer falls 2-0 to Villanova

UD’s Sobhan Tadjalli had a pair of shots and a near goal in the loss to Villanova.

9:39 a.m., Sept. 20, 2006--Scoring a goal in each half, Villanova University defeated the University of Delaware 2-0 in a nonconference men's soccer match played Tuesday night at the Delaware Mini-Stadium.

Villanova (4-5-1) took the lead 18:20 into the match when Dan DeMasters fired a shot from 20 yards out into the lower lefthand corner of the net, beating UD goalkeeper Taylor Thames.

The Fightin' Blue Hens appeared to tie the game in the early stages of the second half when Sobhan Tadjalli gathered in a corner kick and his initial shot was blocked. He regained possession and beat Villanova keeper Jason Friel, but the play was negated by an offside call. Villanova's Neil McNulty made it 2-0 on a goal in the latter stages of the second half. Tadjali led UD with two shots, while Thames had three saves.

With the loss, UD fell to 2-1-2, snapping a four game unbeaten streak. It was the first time the Hens had been undefeated after four games since 1978.

UD will return to action with the start of Colonial Athletic Association play this weekend. The Hens will take to the road for a pair of difficult games, visiting Old Dominion University at 7 p.m., Friday, and the College of William & Mary at 2 p.m., Sunday. Old Dominion is 5-1 and ranked No. 10 in NCAA Division I in the College Soccer News poll and No. 18 in the Soccer America poll, while William & Mary is 4-4 and features CAA player of the week Andrew Hoxie
