Delaware men’s soccer plays Navy to 1-1 draw

Junior Sobhan Tadjalli scored for the Hens in a 1-1 tie against Navy.

1:40 p.m., Sept. 14, 2006--The University of Delaware men's soccer team remained unbeaten with a 1-1 draw against the U.S. Naval Academy in a match played Wednesday night at the Delaware Mini-Stadium.

The Fightin' Blue Hens are now 2-0-2 under first-year Head Coach Ian Hennessy, who is now the first coach in UD men's soccer history to go unbeaten in his first four games.

UD broke on top against Navy when junior forward Sobhan Tadjalli scored just 5:21 into the game, finishing a play set up by one touch passes from Matt Laudeman and Michael Zoellner.

The Hens carried play through much of the first half but Navy (3-3-1) tied the game early in the second half when leading scorer McKenzie Plank beat UD goalkeeper Taylor Thames for the tying score. On the night, Thames had four saves.

Both teams had opportunities to win the game in the waning moments of regulation and in overtime. With 4:30 remaining in the second half, Thames made a diving save to stop a header by Navy's Eric Gorden. Navy keeper Evan Barnes then stoned Laudeman's rocket from 15 yards out less than two minutes into the first overtime.

The Hens held a 13-11 advantage in shots and also led in corner kicks 6-2. Freshman midfielder Paul Danaher led the Hens with four shots.

UD will return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 19, when the Hens play Villanova University at 7 p.m. at the Delaware Mini-Stadium. Villanova is 3-3-1.

UD will then begin Colonial Athletic Association play with games at Old Dominion University on Friday, Sept. 22, and at the College of William & Mary on Sunday, Sept. 24. Old Dominion is 3-1 and ranked No. 13 in the nation, while William & Mary is 2-4 after playing five teams that reached the 2005 NCAA Division I tournament.
