UD baseball assistant new WCU head coach

Greg Mamula has been named interim head coach at West Chester University.

8:57 a.m., Sept. 7, 2006--University of Delaware assistant baseball coach Greg Mamula has been named interim head baseball coach at West Chester University. Mamula, 31, spent five seasons (2002-2006) with the Fightin' Blue Hens, serving as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator.

“I am personally excited for Greg,” UD Head Coach Jim Sherman said of Mamula. “I know how much he's wanted to be a head coach and now he has achieved his goal at West Chester. We're sad to see him leave because he was a tireless worker who gave us everything he could give us for five years. He will make West Chester happy they hired him, and I know he will do a great job there.”

As recruiting coordinator, Mamula has been one of the hardest working and most respected recruiters in the region. Four freshmen in the previous two years have been named to the Colonial Athletic Association All-Rookie team, including 2006 CAA Rookie of the Year Alex Buchholz.

As pitching coach, Mamula oversaw one of the CAA's top staffs. The 2005 unit led the conference in strikeouts, allowed the second lowest opposing batting average and finished third in team earned run average.

With Mamula's departure, newly hired assistant Brian Walker will assume the role of second assistant and pitching coach. “Having Brian on board gives a great credibility to our program, given his experience pitching at a high level in college and professionally,” Sherman said. “Taking over the second assistant slot and serving as our pitching coach helps in the recruiting and development of an outstanding pitching staff.”

Walker pitched for the University of Miami (Fla.), where he compiled a record of 26-5 in three seasons for the national power. He spent five seasons in the New York Mets organization before joining the UD staff in August.

In other news, Sherman announced that volunteer assistant Jim Fallers will be joining the coaching staff at Wilmington College, where he will be an assistant coach under former UD standout Brian August.
