Latino Heritage celebration programs set

Palante Siempre Palante! The Young Lords

5 p.m., Sept. 15, 2006--Celebrate Latino Heritage Month at UD with movies, shows, festivals and lectures from September-November. Sponsored by UD's Office of Latino and Latin American Heritage, the events are free and open to the public.

Upcoming events include:

  • Tortilla Heaven at 8 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 21, in Mitchell Hall. A one-man show starring Comedy Central's Jade Esteban Estrada, Tortilla Heaven is a hilarious yet real story of three generations of a bilingual Mexican-American family;
  • “Latinos in Islam: Rediscovering Our Roots” at 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 5, in 120 Smith Hall. Brother Abu Sa'id Hernan Guadalupe will discuss why Latinos find a close relationship with and embrace Islam today;
  • Comida Latina--Latin Food Festival on Thursday, Oct. 5, in all campus dining halls. The festival features foods from several countries, including Argentina, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico and Spain;
  • Palante Siempre Palante! The Young Lords, at 5 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 10, in 123 Memorial Hall. Using archival footage, photographs and music, the film documents the Young Lords Organization, a group of young Puerto Ricans in Chicago and New York City in the 1960s-70s. The film follows their activities, philosophy, eventual demise and its legacy as an inspirational resource for students and activists today. A discussion about Latino identity and political activism will follow the film;
  • “Identity Construction Among U.S. Latinas and Latinos, at 5 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 24, in 127 Memorial Hall. This panel will focus on how U.S.-born Latinas and Latinos negotiate their identities while navigating the ethnic and mainstream worlds in American society; and
  • Salsa Magic Fiesta, at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 3, in Multipurpose Rooms A and B. Celebrate Latino Heritage Month and Halloween with HOLA. "Salsa Magic" returns to campus again for four hours of nonstop entertainment, including dance lessons, salsa performances, contests and a dance party featuring Latin music, reggaeton and hip-hop. Dress in costume for a chance to win prizes.
