UD employees invited to FSAP fall seminars

3:31 p.m., Sept. 7, 2006--New skills, creative approaches and renewal are the themes of this fall's Faculty Staff Assistance Program (FSAP) lunchtime seminars and support group programs. Participants are asked to register at [www.udel.edu/fsap] and to bring bag lunches to the sessions. Dessert and drinks will be provided.

The seminars and support groups include:

  • Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, noon-1:15 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 14, Collins Room, Perkins Student Center. James M. Walsh, instructor and pastoral counselor, teaches the practice of mindfulness meditation to better manage stress;
  • Family Caregiver Support Group, noon- 1 p.m., Mondays for eight weeks, beginning Sept. 25, 262 Human Resources Building, 413 Academy St. Joyce Shores, coordinator in Caregiver Resource Centers, and Kit Angell, family aftercare coordinator, Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, will provide tips, information on community resources and support to caregivers;
  • Enhancing Your Assertiveness Support Group, noon-1 p.m., Tuesdays, Sept. 26, Oct. 10 and 24, and Thursday, Nov. 9, 262 Human Resources Building, 413 Academy St.
  • Cecily Sawyer-Harmon, FSAP coordinator, and Donna Tuites, Office of Women's Affairs coordinator, will help those who participated in a previous human resources workshop, “Enhancing Your Assertiveness on the Job” (9 a.m., Sept. 19, 261 Human Resources Building), refine their assertive skills in both personal and professional situations. Participants are asked to register for all four sessions;
  • Staying Positive When Life Is Full of Lemons, for times and place, please contact facilitators. Sawyer-Harmon and Tuites will lead a support group to encourage people with chronic illness;
  • Food for Thought: Weight and Body Image Issues, cosponsored by the Office of Women's Affairs and Wellspring, noon-1:15 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 18, 209/211 Trabant University Center. Wendy Cramer, professional relations representative of the Renfrew Center, will lead the seminar which will examine the ways the media influences the way people feel about their bodies and the “drive to be thin” and discuss ways to raise children in this culture;
  • How to Talk to Children about Sexuality, cosponsored by the Office of Women's Affairs, noon-1:15 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 31, Collins Room, Perkins Student Center. Yvonne Nass, consultant with Parent Education Consulting Services, will discuss what children need to know, what parents need to teach and how to communicate messages about sexuality; and
  • Living with Grief at the Holidays, noon-1 p.m., Thursdays, Nov. 9 and 30 and Dec. 7, 262 Human Resources Building, 413 Academy St. Linda Wills, social worker with 15 years of grief counseling and education experience, will provide participants who have lost a loved one, with support, ideas and tools to help them and their families during the holidays.
