Delaware field hockey nips Hofstra in overtime

Molly Burke scored the game-winner in overtime as the Hens defeated Hofstra 3-2.

10:29 a.m., Sept. 25, 2006--Opening its Colonial Athletic Association schedule with a victory, the University of Delaware field hockey team defeated 19th-ranked Hofstra University 3-2 in overtime on Sunday afternoon at Rullo Stadium.

The Fightin' Blue Hens (4-6 overall, 1-0 in the CAA) trailed 2-0 at halftime but came out strong in the second half to tie the game and send it into overtime. UD cut the Hofstra lead in half as sophomore A.J. Karsten scored her first goal of the season by tipping home a shot by junior Molly Burke. Senior Katie Evans tied the game 2-2 nine minutes later after stealing the ball from the Hofstra goalkeeper and scoring her team-leading fifth goal of the season.

Burke scored the game-winner with 2:51 left in overtime when she broke free and scored off a pass from freshman Alexis Esbitt. UD goalkeeper Nikki Rhodes had nine saves.

On Friday, the Hens fell 2-1 to Temple University in a game played at Rullo Stadium. Sophomore Jessica Cortellino scored the only goal for the Hens. Rhoades had one save.

UD will play a pair of CAA games this weekend, facing Virginia Commonwealth University at 7 p.m., Friday, at Rullo Stadium and then traveling to Northeastern University for a game at 2 p.m., Sunday. VCU is 1-8 overall and 0-1 in the conference and Northeastern is 3-5 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
