Delaware field hockey splits weekend games

Casey Howard scored three goals and netted a penalty stroke as the UD field hockey team this weekend.

11:34 a.m., Sept. 18, 2006--The University of Delaware field hockey team split a pair of weekend games, falling 3-2 to the State University of New York at Albany on Friday and defeating St.Joseph's University 3-2 in a shootout on Sunday. Both games were played at Rullo Stadium.

The Fightin' Blue Hens are now 3-5 as they prepare to face 5-3 Temple University at 7 p.m., Friday, at Rullo Stadium. The Hens will remain at home for a Colonial Athletic Association game against 5-2 Hofstra University at 1 p.m., Sunday.

In the victory over St. Joseph's, UD fell behind early but tied the game 1-1 on a goal by Casey Howard. The Hens took the lead 2-1 when Tori Karsten scored off a penalty corner but the Hawks came back to tie. After a scoreless second period and two overtimes, UD won in a shootout, scoring on four of its five opportunities and getting a key save from goalkeeper Nikki Rhoades. In the shootout, UD got scores from Howard, Karsten, Lindsey Piester and Jessica Cortellino, whose shot clinched the victory.

Howard scored both goals in UD's loss to Albany, the second on a feed from freshman Alexis Esbitt. Rhoades, playing in the place of injured senior goalkeeper Megan Allen, had five saves.
