Blue Hen field hockey team tops Syracuse in OT

UD’s Katie Evans scored the winning goal in an overtime shootout against Syracuse.

12:03 p.m., Sept. 5, 2006--The University of Delaware field hockey team fell 2-1 to Ohio State University and defeated Syracuse University 4-3 in an overtime shootout in Blue Hen Classic games played Saturday and Sunday at Rullo Stadium.

The 2-2 Fightin' Blue Hens will return to action with a game at Rutgers University at 1 p.m., Sunday.

In the loss to Ohio State, which entered the game ranked No. 15 nationally, the Hens took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Katie Evans. However, the unbeaten Buckeyes responded with a pair of goals in the second half to earn the win. UD senior goalkeeper Megan Allen had seven saves.

The game against Syracuse was a hard-fought battle, with the teams tied 3-3 at the end of regulation. UD got two goals from sophomore Casey Howard and one from freshman Rachel Schexnayder.

In the first overtime shootout, both teams scored on four of five tries, sending the game into a second shootout. The Hens prevailed with the winning goal scored by Evans. Allen had four saves in regulation and allowed no goals in the second shootout.

In other Blue Hen Classic action, Syracuse defeated the University of Pennsylvania 1-0 and Ohio State blanked Penn 4-0.
